Rakaia Gorge-ous

We had a wild windy tramp along Rakaia River this past Sunday. The water is milky glacial blue.

The bridge spanning Canterbury’s largest river was built between 1880-1882. It has wrought iron supports and wooden slats and is a single lane bridge. It’s fun to drive over, especially if you are the passenger. There are loads of single lane bridges in New Z. I mentioned to my friend Jean that we had just hiked along Rakaia River and she told me that a few years ago the water was almost as high as the bridge. OMG!

A wild place, New Zealand. When my three kids and niece come in December, we will take them jet-boating on the Rakaia.
