Don’t jump………………

Maori consider Cape Reinga the jumping-off point for departing souls.

We are in the far north of the North Island. How did we get here? We flew from Christchurch on the South Island to Auckland on the North Island. We rented a car and drove 4 1/2 hours to Coopers Beach on Doubtless Bay. Yesterday we took a bus tour even further north on the 108 kilometer “giant diving board” to New Z’s northern tip. The Cape Reinga lighthouse emits an end-of-the world feeling.

It is one of those places where photos and postcards simply can’t do justice to the beauty.

An 800-year-old pohutukawa tree is visible on the promontory. Maori believe souls slide down its roots. It is a sacred spot.
